2. Suicide has become the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. In 2009, suicide surpassed motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of injury deaths. The age-adjusted suicide rate for 2010 was 12.1 per 100,000 populations, resulting in 38,000 deaths. Another 1 million people attempted suicide, and 2 million engaged in suicidal ideation. On average, 31,000 suicide deaths occur each year in the United States. Suicide is also one of the top ten causes of death throughout the world, with an estimated 10 to 20 suicide attempts for every completed suicide.
