Before the Industrial Revolution, the gray moths outnumbered black moths in the population. As a result of the Industrial Revolution, soot from factories blackened trees used as habitats for the moths. The frequency of black moths began to dominate the population as they were now better camouflaged from predators. This is an example of directional selection.
