A glucose tolerance test can be used to diagnose hypoglycemia and diabetes mellitus. It involves measuring blood glucose levels before and after a person drinks a liquid containing glucose. In people with hypoglycemia, blood glucose levels may drop too low after consuming the glucose solution. In people with diabetes mellitus, blood glucose levels may remain high for an extended period after consuming the glucose solution. This test is not used to diagnose diabetes insipidus, which is a disorder of water balance caused by impaired production or action of antidiuretic hormone.
