In the late 19th century, German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann excavated the site of Hissarlik in Turkey (Anatolia) and proclaimed it to be the ancient city of Troy. Schliemann believed that the layers of ruins he uncovered corresponded to the different layers of Troy described in Homer's epic poem, the Iliad. Despite some controversy and criticism at the time, Hissarlik is still widely accepted as the location of the ancient city of Troy.
