Copernicus' Heliocentric theory proposed that the sun, not the earth, was the center of the universe and that the planets, including the earth, revolved around it. This was a significant departure from the Ptolemaic model which had been widely accepted at the time. Copernicus did not publish his work until shortly before his death as he feared backlash from the Church.
