Persistent depressive disorder, also known as dysthymia, is characterized by a chronic depressed mood for most of the day, for more days than not, for at least two years. The symptoms are similar to major depressive disorder, such as feelings of hopelessness, low self-esteem, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep, and difficulty concentrating. However, they are less severe in nature and often do not completely interfere with daily functioning.
