Unoxygenated blood can bypass the lungs through anatomical shunts (see Chapter 12 ) and flow directly into the systemic circulation, resulting in significant hypoxemia. This condition, known as persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), presents within 12 hours after birth, causing respiratory distress.
