The majority of modern plants have a dominant sporophyte stage in their life cycle, with the gametophyte being much smaller and dependent on the sporophyte for nutrients. This is a key feature of the plant lineage known as the land plants or embryophytes. Only a small subset of plants (e.g. mosses and liverworts) have a dominant gametophyte stage. In terms of flagellated sperm and the adaptation of the gametophyte to house the sporophyte, these are traits that are not present in the majority of modern plant species.
