The different processes by which material moves into and out of the cell through the plasma membrane include simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis, filtration, active transport, bulk transport, endocytosis, (pinocytosis, phagocytosis, and receptor-mediated endocytosis) and exocytosis. Water passes through the plasma membrane and through aquaporins in response to solute concentration differences inside and outside the cell. This transport process is called osmosis.
