The idea of evolutionary change can be traced back to the ancient Greek philosophers, and it persisted in the minds of scientists until it was documented by Charles Darwin. Jean Baptist Lamarck believed that organisms undergo evolutionary change in response to needs presented by environmental change. We now know that his ideas about how evolution happens are wrong.
Extinction is one possible outcome of evolutionary change. If Lamarck had been correct regarding the mechanism of evolutionary change, would extinction be more a more likely or a less likely outcome of evolutionary change? Explain.
