Members of the subphylum Crustacea are characterized by the presence of two pairs of antennae. They also possess biramous appendages. The subphylum includes five classes. The most common representatives include the crabs, lobsters, and crayfishes (class Malacostraca); fairy shrimp, brine shrimp, and cladocerans (class Branchiopoda); and copepods and barnacles (class Maxillopoda). Adaptations for aquatic environments include the presence of gills and biramous appendages that are often modified for swimming and feeding in aquatic habitats.
