With a hydrostatic skeleton, muscle contraction puts pressure on the fluid inside the body, forcing the body to extend. Opposing muscles then shorten the body to draw the animal forward. Invertebrate exoskeletons consist of hard chitin, which must be shed (molt) for the animal to grow. Endoskeletons are composed of fibrous dense connective tissue along with cartilage or mineralized bone.
