Does pluralism have any negative aspects? Why have some fought so hard against the concept in the United States?

Pluralism is the system in which two or more different groups coexist within one society. The origin of the United States is one where different groups of people migrated from their home countries to settle into a new land. This created an effect known as the melting pot which introduced many different cultures to each other and created the need for a system integrating their various backgrounds so they could coexist. The negative aspects of pluralism is that as different groups meet conflicts between them are inevitable and therefore could disrupt any cohesion in society. Groups have fought against pluralism as it requires a sacrifice to assimilate the different customs, traditions and lifestyles of the varying groups of people into a society. Some of the colonists were benefitting from exploiting the American Indians by taking their land when they first arrived and later did the same to African Americans in the form of slavery. However, these practices would have to end in order to create an assimilated society and so these colonists resisted the concept of pluralism.
