The essential characteristics of science are:
• It is guided by natural law
• It has to be explanatory by reference to nature law
• It is testable against the observing world
• Its conclusions are tentative and not final
• It is falsifiable
Evolutionary studies fit the characteristics of science as evolution is based on nature and its laws. It can also be observed by the world over a period of years. Evolutionary studies also fulfill the rest of the characteristics by being a hypothesis till proved.
"Scientific creationism" or its new name "intelligent design theory" is related to religion and thus do not come under science. Science and religion are independent of each other.
