Transfusion of red blood cells in a patient with chronic nonspherocytic, hemolytic anemia as the result of an erythrocyte enzyme deficiency does not reverse or prevent the recipient's condition. However, a transfusion does help to raise the patient's hemoglobin. If tests are performed to quantitate the enzyme after a transfusion, the results can be within the normal reference intervals.
