Figure 1.18 In the example below, the scientific method is used to solve an everyday problem. Which part in the example below is the hypothesis? Which is the prediction? Based on the results of the experiment, is the hypothesis supported? If it is not supported, propose some alternative hypotheses.
1. My toaster doesn't toast my bread.
2. Why doesn't my toaster work?
3. There is something wrong with the electrical outlet.
4. If something is wrong with the outlet, my coffeemaker also won't work when plugged into it.
5. I plug my coffeemaker into the outlet.
6. My coffeemaker woks. Figure 1.18 In the example below, the scientific method is used to solve an everyday problem. Which part in the example below is the hypothesis? Which is the prediction? Science is a system in which experiments and observations are done in order to describe the structural and physical phenomenon of the world. When a scientist performs experiments, several variables are obtained whose value is not constant. The value is then compared with control of the experiments. When the scientist proposes an explanation of the phenomenon without any or very limited facts and observation, it is called a hypothesis.
In this experiment, the hypothesis is given in number 3 and number 4 because we are making a conclusion according to what we have observed. The prediction is the result we obtained after an experiment which is number 6. The prediction showed that the toaster is working which means that our assumption or hypothesis was wrong.
An alternate hypothesis would be " the toaster is broken " or " the outlet is not working " where we will have to design a different experiment to observe the prediction of our hypothesis.
