Although one green and one red alga hold records for living hundreds of meters in the sea, most seaweeds and marine plants inhabit the inner continental shelf. Some kinds are strictly intertidal. Seaweeds and seagrasses as groups have wide geographic ranges, but mangroves are tropical and marsh plants temperate. Most green and red algae are annuals and may be highly seasonal in occurrence. Most brown algae and marine vascular plants are perennials and can form persistent marine communities.
