Dolphins locate their prey using echolocation. They produce a series of sounds that are directed by the melon in their head into the water ahead of them; when these sounds strike prey or another object, they bounce back as echoes to the dolphin, which senses the echoes with its lower jaw. Characteristics such as the amplitude and frequency of the returning sounds give the dolphin a mental image of what is in front of it.
