B steals a flat-screen television and laptop from V's house, which is considered as a criminal case.
V will be responsible for bringing the criminal case to the jury.
Outcome:
Jury believes that B burgled V house, because of state-of-the-art security system at V house, which captured the images of B.
The government will seek to punish the defendant with a prison sentence or a fine. In addition, sometimes there is a chance for both prison sentence and fine. The fine money goes to the government, but not to the injured party.
Civil law:
B steals a flat-screen television and laptop and does damage to the property of V's house, which is considered as a civil case.
V will be responsible for bringing the civil case to the jury.
Outcome:
Jury believes that B burgled V house, because of state-of-the-art security system at V house, which captured the images of B.
The government will ask B to bare the amount of damages and V will get his injunction. However, B will not go to jail.
