Criminal justice system:
It is a group of government agencies and their relative processes created to focus on investigation and providing punishment to the criminal for his/her crime. This framework of agencies protects the public by controlling the crime rate. It also provides criminal penalties and rehabilitation efforts to people who violate the country's laws.
System:
System is an organized body consisting of interdependent parts with certain dealings or action in order to attain the goals. It is developed by environment within which they function. This constitutes various set of principles or procedures that is followed in a sequence for accomplishing a common goal. In case of criminal justice system, the primary subsystem is as follows:
• Police
• Courts
• Correction
Following are the administration functions in system of criminal justice:
Criminal justice system constitutes a sequential process were various qualified professional performs activities related to resolving criminal affairs to protect the public from felony. A criminal justice system functions based on four characteristics that are as follows:
• Discretion: In a criminal justice system, discretion takes place in all the levels of legal enforcements. The discretion is executed by different authorized persons in a criminal justice who are as follows:
• Police
• Prosecutors
• Magistrates
• Correctional officials
These authorized persons can act as per their own authority and judgment.
• Resource dependence: This indicates how the resources are generated in the system of criminal justice using different agencies. Here, the authorized person of criminal justice system must have good relationship with the persons who allocate such resources. Some of the person who assign these resources are as follows:
• Legislators (political decision making members)
• City council members
• Mayors
• Sequential task: The functions of the criminal justice system are constituted in a sequential manner. Here, first the police have to arrest the suspected person before the prosecutor takes charge of the case. Further, the prosecutor determines whether the case must be charged. The prosecutor's decision can be influenced by the nature of the court's workload. Then, various decisions from the police, prosecutors, and courts help to find the exact offenders. Finally, these offenders are arrested and sent to the correction agencies. Therefore, only by a sequential task criminal justice system can accomplish its goals.
• Filtering: The criminal justice officers filter out offenses in certain cases according to the level of crime to determine which case has to be charged. This is done before the case passes to the next level (sequential task) for decision-making.
