On September 11, 2001, four airliners were hijacked: Two were flown into the World Trade Center in New York, one into the Pentagon, and another crashed in Pennsylvania. Some of those injured and representatives of those who died sued the airlines, the airport security companies, and the airport operators. Among other claims, the plaintiffs alleged the defendants performed negligent screening. The defendants responded that they owed no duty to the victims because the defendants could not reasonably foresee terrorists would hijack several jumbo jets and crash them, killing passengers, crew, thousands on the ground, and themselves. Were the crashes within a foreseeable class of hazards resulting from the negligent performance of security screenings?
