Adult Playgrounds
The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation installed its first adult playground in the Bronx in the summer of 2012 complete with 15 pieces of equipment at a cost of $200,000. The adult playgrounds do not have swings and slides, but rather are outdoor gyms or fitness areas. The equipment is arranged like a children's playground and are the classic browns and greens that adults remember from their childhood.
In the fall of 2012 New York City expanded the idea to another park and added fitness equipment, exercise mats, chess tables, and a sign that said "adult space." A local adult resident was pleased with the addition and said "there are a lot of tot lots, but there's no space for us."
Seattle moms Paige Green Dunn and Kelly Singer wanted moms to stay healthy despite their busy schedules of family and work. They formed Mom entum, a nonprofit organization that helps communities build outdoor gyms with low-impact cardio equipment and strengthening machines. The equipment requires no electricity and is eco-friendly. The equipment faces existing children's playgrounds so that users can supervise their children while they work out.
