Impact of Religion on Program Planning
The local parks and recreation agency in a city of 50,000 people is going to offer an indoor youth soccer league from September through December on Saturdays. In setting the schedule for the league, the Youth Sports Coordinator became concerned about religious and other holidays that she should avoid. This is a very diverse community where Catholics make up 25.1%, Baptists 15.8%, mainline Christian (Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian) 12.9%, Muslim 2.5%, Jewish 2%, Latter Day Saints 1.4%, and the rest of the community has no religious affiliation. The past supervisor of this program scheduled games every Saturday regardless of whether or not it was a religious holiday. His attitude was, "If they want to play, they will play. If they want to go to church, they will go to church."
