Intergenerational Programming
The County of San Diego Aging and Independent Services understands that today's seniors are living longer and healthier lives, are better educated, and are more affluent than in the past. They see the need to engage this group to enhance socialization, increase emotional support, and help the adults engage in meaningful activities. They are doing this through intergenerational programs where adults and youth participate in programs together to share their talents, experience, and knowledge to develop beneficial relationships. Here are a few examples of successful programs: a
Broadway Heights Community Council's Intergenerational Tour: The youth in the neighborhood participate in a leadership development program with the seniors in the community to receive ongoing mentorship, tutoring, and leadership skills training. Part of this program was a 5640-mile trip across the country to experience important locations related to the Civil Rights Movement.
Foster Youth Mentor Program: Senior mentors are matched with children in the foster care system. These mentors nurture children to provide guidance, stability, friendship, and mentoring to build self-esteem, self-reliance, self-sufficiency, academic excellence, and social skills.
Generations Sharing: Local day trips are planned to historic and cultural destinations in San Diego. The program is designed to provide opportunities for elementary-age children, teens, and older adults to foster bonds, share a learning experience, and discuss their insights and past experiences relating to the trip.
