International Travel Deficit
CNN reported that 30% of Americans have passports. a This number spiked from the teens once the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative was enforced in 2009. This law required people residing in any North American country to have a passport to visit the other countries. This was significant as over 50% of international travel done by Americans is to Canada and Mexico.
The U.S. Travel Association suggests that 30% is too low for U.S. passport holders considering the affluence of the U.S. and that 60% of Canadians and 75% of the United Kingdom have passports.
Tourism experts suggest several reasons Americans do not travel more internationally:
1. There is a lot of cultural and geographic diversity in the United States to experience.
2. There is skepticism, ignorance, and fear about other countries.
3. The U.S. work ethic prevents the long vacations required for international travel.
4. The cost of international travel is too high.
Look at Table 1. What would keep you from visiting each of these countries
