In 1979, Congress passed the Chrysler Corporation Loan Guarantee Act to keep the Chrysler Corporation in business and out of bankruptcy. The act established the Chrysler Corporation Loan Guarantee Board, made up of top federal officials, to oversee Chrysler's bailout.
