Food is an edible content that is consumed by living organisms. It provides the necessary energy and nutrition for the maintenance of the living body. Types of foods include dairy foods, vegetables, fruits, fish and seafood, grains, beans and nuts, meat and poultry, etc. So, basically, all food sources are rich with three major macronutrients, namely carbohydrates, fats and proteins. For example, a gram of carbohydrates and proteins yields 4 kcal, whereas fats yield 9 Kcal of energy. The reason behind the high yield of the energy of fats is that fats have 1:2: 1 of C: H:O ratio, whereas carbohydrates have 1:2:1of C: H:O ratio.
Food habits are termed as the way of selecting and consuming the food as per the individual needs. The eating habits depend on the culture, availability of food, ability to digest, etc. So, it differs from one another. For example, A diet that is rich in proteins is called 'high-protein diet.' A high-protein diet plan states consumption of more than 200 grams of per day. Usually, one gram of protein gives 4 Kcal of energy, so consumption of 200 grams gives 800 Kcal of energy per day.
If people take High-protein diet, then these excessive calories become used for muscle building. People who take High protein diet have increased levels of Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). This growth factor stimulates and gives signals to the body to synthesize or building muscle proteins. Therefore, bodybuilders commonly follow the High-protein diet plan.
Organisms that have the ability to consume a vast variety of food items (autotrophs, herbivores, or carnivores) are called omnivores. For example, humans are omnivores and consume any type of food items (plants and animals) but depend on the habitation, culture and availability of food. People who have the tendency to try new food choices and types are called "neophilia." Whereas, people who do not have the tendency to try new food choices and types are called "neophobia."
People must be adaptable enough to eat an assortment of things adequate for physical development and support, yet careful enough not to haphazardly ingest sustenances that are physiologically unsafe and, potentially, lethal. In addition to the availability of food items, all necessary nutrients cannot be supplemented in a single food type, which is termed as omnivore paradox. It results in two conflicting mental driving forces in regard to eat less. The first is a fascination in new sustenances; the second is an inclination for well-known nourishments.
