In human populations in developed countries women generally outlive men by a margin of 5-10 years. Is this advantage in female longevity a general characteristic of nonhuman animal species as well? What might explain such a pattern in humans and other animals? Cohen (2004) reviews this question, and Carey et al. (1995) provide data on fruit flies to test this generalization.
