Zebra fish are common aquarium pets; they also are often used in research on vision. In the wild, zebra fish inhabit shallow, sunny portions of coral reefs in tropical oceans. A biologist at Florida State University discovered a gene important for development in most animals that also affects the ratio of rods to cones in the eyes of this fish. The retina of a normal zebra fish has both rods and cones, whereas the mutant fish has almost all rods in its retina. What types of visual differences would you expect to find if you tested the two types of fish? How well adapted would the mutant fish be to the shallow, sunny waters of the coral reef habitat?
