Most rainforest soil is very poor, with almost all of the nutrients available at the surface. To compete and capture these nutrients, some trees have very shallow roots and develop buttress roots ( Fig. ). Some buttress roots grow as high as 15 feet above the ground. Which root function do you think buttress roots perform? What kinds of cells would you predict dominate buttress roots? Would you predict that these trees have deep taproots? How tall would you predict buttressed trees to be: in the upper or lower canopy of the rainforest?
