When the fruiting body of the inky cap mushroom begins to mature, digestive enzymes are released and the mushroom digests itself into a sticky, black liquid ( Fig. ). This self-digestion process causes the closely packed gills to pull apart and release millions of sexual spores into the air. However, the inky liquid traps many spores. If they germinate and grow, which spores are more likely to form a new fruiting body: those in the inky fluid or those released into the air? Why?
