Geography can have a dramatic impact on the water cycle. Air currents blowing up against mountains cause air to rise and rapidly cool, causing moisture to fall as precipitation. As a result, one side of the mountain range receives more moisture and the other receives less rain, a condition called a rain shadow effect. Based on your understanding of plant communities from Unit 3 and the water cycle, speculate about this influence on the water cycle at the regional level. Using the map in Figure as your guide, explain which area, A or B, experiences the rain shadow effect from the Cascade mountains and how that influences the plant communities.
