The brown pelican and American white pelican are close relatives that have decidedly different habitat requirements ( Fig. ). The brown pelican is distinguished from the American white pelican by its coloration and its habit of diving for fish from the air, as opposed to cooperative fishing from the surface. Brown pelicans live on the coasts year-round, whereas American white pelicans migrate long distances between northern habitats where they breed in the summer and southern coastal areas where they overwinter. Speculate about which species might be more susceptible to problems with habitat fragmentation. Defend your answer.
