An internist had a 54-year-old obese patient who smoked and had a stressful job. After he died of a heart attack, an autopsy revealed that the overweight man had coronary artery disease. The patient's family sued the physician for negligence and won a $3.5 million judgment against the internist. During jury deliberations, some jurors who heard testimony in the case argued that the physician did everything possible to try to help the patient, but others maintained that he could have done more.
