ETHICS ISSUE 1: As citizens and as professionals with special training and experience, health care practitioners are ethically obligated to assist in the administration of justice. If a patient who has a legal claim requests a health care practitioner's assistance, he or she should furnish medical evi­dence, with the patient's consent, in order to secure the patient's legal rights.
Medical experts should have recent and substantive experience in the area in which they testify and should limit testimony to their sphere of medical expertise.
An orthopedic surgeon who has been retired from practice for 15 years and is a friend of the plaintiff's has been called to testify in the plaintiff's suit alleging damage to his hip joint sustained in a car accident. In your opinion, is it ethical for the physician described above to testify? Explain your answer.
