ETHICS ISSUE 1: According to the ethical guidelines for a number of professional organizations, incompetence, corruption, or dishonest or unethical conduct on the part of health care practitioners is never acceptable. In addition to posing a real or potential threat to patients, such conduct undermines the public's confidence in the health care professions.
A medical office employee who routinely enters codes for Medicaid, Medicare, HMO, and private insurance billing visits her physician across town in a different medical office for an examination of a finger she believes is broken. As she is leaving her physician's exam room, she glances at the billing sheet in her hand and sees that her physician has coded for an examination that was not performed. The code the physician has entered means that the patient's insurance carrier will be billed for a more expensive exam than the one that was actually performed.
Assume the patient in the above situation confronts her physician and the physician replies, "So? That's no big deal." What should the patient do in this case?
