Laura Swisher, an associate professor in the physical therapy department at the University of South Florida, says physical therapists are moving toward more autonomy, which creates new ethical issues. For example, in the past it was unethical for physical therapists to diagnose a patient. Now, however, patients have direct access to physical therapists, who often diagnose conditions and refer patients to physicians.
Since a physical therapist may see a patient before he or she visits a physician, does the PT have an ethical obligation to ask this patient about health (e.g., Do you get regular physical exams? Are your immunizations up to date? Have you had health problems in other areas lately?)? Explain your answer.
