The long arm of the normal human Y chromosome contains a duplicated region of about 100 kb flanking a set of genes necessary for male fertility. In some mutant Y chromosomes the male-fertility genes are missing, and only one copy of the duplication is present. How can this observation be explained? Does the observation tell you anything about how the duplications are oriented in the chromosome?
