A 79-year-old man with severe peripheral vascular disease has been told that a nonhealing lesion on his foot must be treated with either vascular bypass surgery or amputation of the foot. Although the surgeon believes the foot can be saved with bypass, the man elects to have the amputation. His main reason is that the site will heal more quickly and allow him to resume normal activities sooner. He asks for the nurse's opinion.
