The Case of the Disappearing Potato Chips
At a Walgreens in San Francisco, a cashier who had worked for the store for almost 18 years helped herself to a bag of potato chips and ate them while on duty. When her shift ended, she paid for the chips. Walgreens fired her for violating company policy.
But it wasn't just a case of an employee breaking the rules. The employee has diabetes, and while she was working, she realized her blood sugar was falling dangerously low. She had forgotten to carry her usual piece of candy, so she ate the chips as the best solution she could think of to protect herself. After she was fired, she took her case to the government's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The EEOC sued Walgreens for discriminating against her because of her disability.
