Thermotoga maritima was discovered in geothermically heated marine sediments and prefers water of about 80°C. Analysis of rRNA puts it in the bacterial group, but gene sequencing of the entire genome reveals a more complex picture. About 50 percent of T. maritima genes resemble bacterial genes, about 25 percent of its genes are unique, and about 25 percent resemble those of archaeans, the thermophile Pyrococcus horikoshii in particular. Suggest two possible explanations for the similarity between these prokaryotes of different domains.
