Feminism can be defined as the idea of freedom for women politically, economically and socially with equal rights and opportunities for women as same as for men. The society and culture have been influencing the women's health since ages. Women's health is also considered as the ability to achieve and get benefit from the health care. Women accessing health care have been increasing constantly since past two decades but have been in process since last two centuries.
The idea of feminism has been undergoing different changes and improvements. The reduction in mortality during pregnancy and child birth had been decreased enormously with improved and advances medical facilities that contributed to gain some social rights for women. Till 1800, the mortality rate in U.S and Europe were 25 to 85 per every 1000 women during child birth. At present, the mortality rate is 13 or even low since, 19 th century.
There were 10-25% child mortality had been reported during late 1800s and now it has been reduced to 0.7%. Since, 1800s the political, economical and social rights of women have been found to be increased. During early 1900s women have no right to vote and were confined to employments with low pay. But, as the time changing women have been fighting for their rights and have achieved them gradually. They achieved right of higher education, right of using birth control methods, achieved legal rights for owning a property, legal divorce or separation under unavoidable circumstances.
During mid 1800s women fought for health improvement and gained medical facilities, nursing care and equal status of profession by attending medical schools and becoming medical professionals. By 1920, women achieved right of vote. For the first time, U.S constitution provided right of vote for women in 19 th amendment. In 1917, National women's party proposed the equal rights amendment. During world war II women employed in military along with men.
During 1960s birth control has become a legal right of women. In 1972, U.S congress passed the equal rights amendment. During 1980s-90s biomedical research and opened wide opportunities for women to become researchers and achieved health care management. In 21 st century, women have been enrolled in human genome studies, clinical trials in drug discovery for HIV/AIDS etc.
Women have more politically, socially empowered since last decade. In my view as a feminist, still, women are needed to be protected from social and domestic violence in developing countries and are to be focused for provision of health care insurance worldwide. Therefore, definition of feminism have been changing since, past two centuries and reaching heights of sky empowering women.
