Sociological imagination is a concept that guides us to interpret our day to day social experiences in terms of larger social phenomenon. For example, eating out at fast food joints, are not just individual behaviors, but has implications from the social conditions prevailing in the community.
Credit card debt by the college students is one of the problems that can be explained with the help of Sociological Imagination. Use of credit cards by college students may be viewed as an individual behavior, but it has larger sociological implications. The peer pressure to own a credit card, use it impulsively, the system that sells credit cards to the students, etc. have wider scheme of things.
A student may not require a credit card, if the education is funded by family or other educational systems. On the other hand the student life is not just limited to academics alone; there are implicit pressures on the students to spend money to belong to the student community.
