A 2004 Gallup Poll reported that 84 percent of American adults believe religion is either "very" or "fairly" important in their lives. Business scholars and reporters note a renewed interest in religion and spirituality in the workplace. In one survey, 40 percent of those responding to a Fortune 1,000 survey felt that "religious principles and values were an integral part of their organization's culture." Scholars Ian Mitroff and Elizabeth Denton undertook a "spiritual audit of corporate America" and concluded that managers desire a way to express their spiritual selves at work and that managers often are unable to bring their "complete selves" to work. They argue that business must acknowledge the soul to maximize performance.
