In October 1998, members of the Graphic Communications International Union, representing employees of The San Diego Union-Tribune, distributed leaflets urging a boycott of Robinsons-May, a department store that advertised in the newspaper. The protest was conducted at the privately owned, upscale Fashion Valley Mall. Mall owners stopped the leaflet distribution as it was being conducted in front of the department store.
