Assume the role of Carla Reyes. You arrived at the airport last Saturday only to find that Cross Country Airlines canceled your 1:00 p.m. flight because of a severe thunderstorm. You thought about renting a car and driving the seven hours to your home, but several other stranded passengers with canceled flights had the same idea, so no cars were available for one-way rental.
While you were at a major airport, you live in a small town where there are only two flights to your hometown each day. You were rebooked on the only later flight available that day, at 9:50 p.m. You waited all day in the airport and were just 25 minutes from boarding your flight when you were told that your 9:50 flight had been canceled because a flight crew was unavailable. The agent at the Cross Country Airlines service counter said that the 1:00 p.m. flight the following day was already booked and that you had been assigned to Sunday's 9:50 p.m. flight.
The airline offered to put you up in a hotel for the evening and transport you to the airport on Sunday. This was unacceptable. First, you were flying home to attend your grandfather's 80th birthday celebration on Sunday. You would have missed the party if you had taken that 9:50 p.m. Sunday flight. Second, the hotel checkout is at 11:00 a.m., which means you would have had to spend almost 12 hours at the airport on Sunday.
Fortunately, by 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, you were able to secure a one-way car rental to your hometown, so you decided to cancel your seat on the Sunday, 9:50 p.m. flight. The car rental cost $96. As you made the seven-hour drive to your home, you decided that you should be refunded the $112 cost of the ticket that you were not able to use through no fault of your own. In addition, to compensate for the seven hours you had to spend driving through the night to reach your grandfather's party, you believe the airline should pay for your rental as well.
Write to Cross Country Airlines and request that the company pay for your rental and refund the money for your ticket. Be sure to provide details the reader needs to know to act quickly on your request.
