Most airline, hotel and motel, and even car-rental companies offer special discounts to large groups traveling together or going to the same location for a conference, meeting, or convention. These special discounts are made available by assigning a special code for the group members to use when making reservations. For example, in August 2012, if an individual had gone to the shopping-center meeting in Las Vegas, American Airline's special 25-percent to 30-percent discount code was Star #SZ9Z1K1, and the Delta code was File #ZX232. An individual attending the apparel market in Dallas during the same time period would be given different airline codes but be offered a similar discount. In addition, if some apparel buyers had desired to rent a car, they could have used code 79242, Group G3, at Hertz for an extra discount. These travel companies, however, don't want members of the general public to be able to use their codes to reduce travel costs.
Over the summer, you interned at a travel agency that obtained access to these codes and used them to generate a substantial sales increase by publishing an e-mail newsletter featuring an extensive list of locations and dates when these discounts were available. The customers could only take advantage of these discounts by purchasing their tickets and hotel and car reservations through your travel agency. Several airlines objected to this action, but since the recession had reduced their traffic, they let the travel agency continue to use the discounts. Besides, it was because of this additional business that the agency was able to hire you for the summer.
