Richard B. Slatcher and James W. Pennebaker at the University of Texas at Austin (2006) randomly assigned one of two members of 86 couples who were dating to either an emotional writing condition or to a control writing condition. Participants in the emotional writing condition ( N = 44) were instructed to write during 20 minutes for three days about their deepest emotions regarding their relationship; participants in the control condition ( N = 42) were to write about their activities during the day. Three months later, of the 44 people who had written about their emotions, 34 were still dating; of the 42 people in the control condition, 22 were still dating. Use these data to determine if emotional writing is significantly related to relationship stability.
