Maddie was in tears when she finally decided to show her mother the message a friend's mother had posted on her Facebook page. The mother blamed Maddie for the low grade her daughter recently received on a group science project, and accused her of "not working as hard as the other team members" and "turning in sloppy work." Maddie was reluctant to let her mother see the posting despite the fact that it had been bothering her for several days. She fears that her mother will contact school authorities or the friend's mother now that she knows and worries about the repercussions.
School-age children have been quick to adopt cyber-bullying as a preferred method for harassing their peers. Access to cell phones, tablets, and computers has made it increasingly easy for children to reach their victims and to engage in non-confrontational bullying. They consider cyberbullying to be reasonably anonymous, transparent, and unlikely to result in after-school detention.
Although victims are spared physical injury, they often suffer significant humiliation, emotional trauma, and find it difficult to avoid unless they turn off all cell phones and computers. Many administrators believe cyber-bullying is reaching crisis levels in their schools. School boards are establishing disciplinary policies in an effort to curb malicious postings and online harassment. State legislators have also begun to introduce bills that hold children and their parents, in some instances, responsible for engaging in cyber-bullying.
Think About This:
Why do some children feel the need to bully others
What behavioral changes might a parent observe if their child was being harassed
Why not just tell children to turn off their cell phones and computers to avoid being bullied
Should children who engage in bullying be expelled from school Why might this not be the best option
Should parents be held responsible when children engage in cyber-bullying What are the pros and cons
