It is easy to assume that everyone knows how to wash their hands and understands the importance of doing so. However, multiple studies have shown that even health care workers fail to follow recommended hand washing guidelines approximately 40 to 50 percent of thetime (White et al., 2012; Fuller et al., 2011). Serious concerns have been raised about the lack of hand washing compliance in light of an increase in antibiotic-resistant infections. The use of hand sanitizing gels has proven beneficial for preventing the spread of some communicable illnesses, but they are not considered effective against all infectious organisms.
Because schools and early childhood programs provide ideal settings for the spread of communicable illnesses, it is especially important that teachers practice careful hand washing. However, hand washing is not always followed rigorously in these settings. As a result, researchers continue to look for ways to improve hand washing compliance in health care facilities, schools, and early childhood programs including the use of surveillance cameras, training videos, sanitizing gels, sink placement, and checklists (Armellino et al., 2012; Wilson, Jacob, Powell, 2011).
Think About This:
Why do you think teachers often fail to wash their hands at the necessary times
What are the barriers
What would motivate teachers to improve their hand hygiene compliance
Should schools resort to high tech methods (i.e., video cameras) to ensure compliance
How would you respond if you observed a teacher who served the children lunch without first washing his or her hands
